Peter Fendi (Erotic Art)

Peter Fendi (1796 - 1842) was an Austrian painter, engraver and lithographer. He was a child prodigy and was accepted into the St Annes Academy of Fine Art at only 13 years of age.
He is famous as a pioneer of the techniques of multicolored printing, and designed the 5, 10 and 100 guilder banknotes that were issued in 1841 by the Austrian government.
Due to popular demand, we have included the series of 40 erotic watercolors/lithographs "by Peter Fendi".
This series is probably one of the best known in the genre of erotic art, though Fendi is only the 28th artist we have added to the gallery.
Why has it taken so long for Peter Fendi to be included? Because the prints he is famous for were actually printed in Vienna in 1910 in the style of Peter Fendi and have since been falsely attributed to him.
According to the exhibition catalog Peter Fendi und sein Kreis many experts in the field have expelled claims that these erotic watercolors/lithographs were by Peter Fendi.
The erotic series of 40 lithographs first emerged from Vienna in 1910, nearly 70 years after Fendi's death. They are a limited edition of 600 copies in total. Before then, there is no record of them existing. Besides this series, no other painting or print by Fendi would be considered erotic. It simply wasn't his genre.
Without a doubt they are in the style of Peter Fendi and it is a very well crafted and beautiful series. It is a shame we do not know who the original artist was.
